Yesterday was fun. Took the girls shopping at noonish, then swung by the school to pick up our newly arrived foreign teachers for a trip to XuanWu Lake. I got to play tour guide a bit and NOT GET US LOST for once! We didn’t see a whole ton of the park, but we did rent a boat and buy some coconuts to drink while we strolled afterwards.
Folks decided traditional Chinese food was in order after our walk, so we wandered for a bit looking for a good restaurant and by sheer dumb luck stumbled onto Hunan Road, a bit of a shopping/eating/big shiny lights hotspot here in Nanjing. No sooner than we entered the main drag, we were asked to participate in a girl’s “Happy Birthday” video for her professor and give directions to a poor young woman and her entire family to get them to IKEA. After all parties went away happy, we found a restaurant that looked promising. And it was yummy.
I am beyond proud of myself at this point in time because I managed to order food from a Chinese menu and a waitress who did not speak English and NO ONE DIED! Granted I was not expecting the shrimp in the cabbage soup but this is a major milestone for me.
Oh, also: After dinner, we met A CHINESE SPEAKING BIRD. It kept chirping “谢谢,谢谢!” (xiexie: thank you) It was amazing! I’ll post a link to the video my friend took when I can.
